Karl Ristenpart and the Chamber Orchestra of Saar were my favourite performers of Bach when their recordings were originally released by Nonesuch in the 60 s and 70 s. They have been out of print for many years and I was particularly excited to find this gem, recently released on ACCORD records in France. To have these historic recordings available again is very gratifying.

The performance is perfectly balanced, both in tempo and interpretation. The soloists are exceptional, with superstars like Maurice Andre. This recording is also exceptional in that it contains a "retranscription" of the Concerto for 3 Harpsichords and Strings, originally derived by Bach from a concerto for 3 violins, which was lost. It is an outstanding work and an equally outstanding performance.

Although the Suites are in stereo, the concerto for harpsichord, flute, and violin and this concerto are recorded in mono, which is only slightly distracting. However, the violin cadenza near the end of the third movement is still astonishing, with the violins playing in an "echo delay" effect. It s an excellent performance of this little-recorded transcription.

This recording will take a high position in my collection as my favourite of these works.
